InDesign PDF hyperlinks not working? Audit the final export.

First, identify which layer failed

• Authoring: the object or text was never assigned a real hyperlink destination.
• Export: the PDF settings did not preserve hyperlinks or interactive elements.
• Destination: the PDF contains the link, but the URL is wrong, redirected, restricted, or unavailable.

Scanning the exported PDF tells you whether the problem happened before or after the link annotation was written into the file.

InDesign hyperlink export checklist

1. Open Window → Interactive → Hyperlinks and confirm each source points to the intended destination.
2. Use complete external URLs, including https://, and remove accidental leading or trailing spaces.
3. For digital documents, export as Adobe PDF (Interactive).
4. If you need Adobe PDF (Print), enable the Hyperlinks option in the export dialog.
5. Open the exported PDF and scan that exact file with LinkHandoff.
6. Review internal page jumps separately from external web destinations, then manually open business-critical links.

When only one destination fails

Inspect the exact URL stored in the PDF. A trailing space can become %20; a copied tracking link may have expired; a shared destination may point to an old address; and a redirect may land on a generic homepage instead of the promised resource.

When internal navigation fails

Check that page and text-anchor destinations still exist after pages were inserted, removed, or reordered. Export again, then use the page map to confirm the click areas remain on the intended pages.
