PowerPoint PDF hyperlinks not working? Audit the exported file.
A hyperlink can work during a slideshow and still disappear when the presentation becomes a PDF. Separate a PowerPoint setup problem from an export limitation before you send the deck.
Check your exported PDF ↗First, determine whether the link reached the PDF
Scan the exported PDF instead of the .pptx file, then compare the page map with your linked slides:
- No clickable area appears: PowerPoint or the PDF conversion method omitted the link annotation.
- The clickable area appears but fails: the PDF contains the link, but its destination may be incomplete, restricted, expired, or unavailable.
- Text links work but images do not: inspect how the link was attached to each object and whether the export method preserves object hyperlinks.
PowerPoint-to-PDF hyperlink checklist
- Select each linked word, image, shape, or button in PowerPoint and confirm its destination.
- For web destinations, use a complete address beginning with
https://. - On Windows, use File → Export → Create PDF/XPS instead of sending the presentation through a print-to-PDF workflow.
- On macOS, use Best for electronic distribution and accessibility when it is available.
- If macOS export still drops links, save the deck to OneDrive, open it in PowerPoint for the web, and download the PDF from there.

Why print-to-PDF is risky for interactive decks
A print workflow is designed to reproduce a page’s appearance. Hyperlinks, slide jumps, buttons, media, and other presentation actions are not printed marks, so a PDF printer may leave them behind.
Use PowerPoint’s export or download command, then verify the resulting PDF independently. A correct-looking slide is not proof that its clickable areas survived.
Check object links and internal navigation separately
PowerPoint decks often attach links to shapes, screenshots, icons, or transparent overlays rather than visible URL text. Test those objects explicitly.
